Honouring A Generation

75th Aniversary Of The Evacuation Of The Gibraltarians

The Government is delighted to make available on-line the exhibition about the Evacuation of the people of Gibraltar during the Second World War. This exhibition run very successfully at the John Mackintosh Hall in May 2015.

I am also very grateful to Mr Joe Gingell for making the exhibits available and to the Archivist Anthony Pitaluga and his team who have been instrumental in digitising them.

The Evacuation of the people of Gibraltar was a landmark in the political development of our country. It was a traumatic event for those involved. Almost overnight, women, children, the elderly and the infirm were sent away from Gibraltar first to French Morocco and then onwards to Madeira, Jamaica, London and Northern Ireland.

The experiences that the evacuees underwent and the sense of helplessness on the part of the men left behind on the Rock accounted in large measure for the demands for greater self-government that followed the War.

The Government felt that it was important to commemorate the 75th anniversary of the Evacuation in a number of different ways. This on-line exhibition is one of them.
